I thought of this essay when I heard an excellent commentary on NPR by Daniel Shore. It was called “An Erroneous Presumption Of Regularity”. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=98408013 Shore said, “The culture of corruption extends beyond government to what we call the private sector.” He provided well-publicized examples from both realms. I wondered if he expects too much when he said, “For President-elect Barack Obama, perhaps the greatest challenge he faces is restoring confidence, not only in government but in each other.” From my own experience with being punished as a child for dishonesty, I conclude that the lesson described in "Lying, Cheating and Stealing: Everybody’s Doing It" is most easily learned in one's youth. It is never too late, though. And to Shore's comment about Obama, I say it does not fall to the country's President alone. The entire community has a role to play, just as this essay illustrates.
